2 Corinthians 5:7

For we live by faith, not by sight.

I Remember. . .

I remember,  the very beginning of Action Ministries Houston, Inc.

Our dear friend from Waco, Texas, came to perform a wedding ceremony. He said that he had a vision from the Lord for us and could we talk when he came back from the wedding. At 9:30 that evening he described a vision he had and what it would entail from us and what we could possibly do going forward.

Gordon’s eyes lit up and they chatted nonstop for quite some time. Finally, our friend asked me what I thought. I told him I was behind Gordon, no matter what. Then, he asked me a question that stopped me. “Are you ready to live by faith?” I looked at him in a questioning way and said that we had lived that way for quite some time. And he said, “No, Pat. God is asking you:  Are You Ready to Live By Faith?” I paused and then, looked Gordon straight in the eyes (I can still see his face) and said, “Yes, I am ready to live by faith.” And then we prayed.

He then asked Gordon, “When do you want to start?” Gordon looked at his watch and said, “Immediately.” It was 2:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning.

The next morning, we went to church and Gordon started telling anyone and everyone who would listen about his new venture.  Some people were excited; others just shook their heads. Our pastor, upon listening to Gordon, asked Gordon to come to his office on Tuesday to chat further.

Tuesday, Gordon went to the pastor’s office. I was not included so I spent my lunch time in prayer. Gordon explained what his vision was in length. The pastor then asked how Gordon planned to finance the vision and Gordon replied, “By faith.” The pastor said that it could not be done.  Gordon argued that he felt that this was what God was calling, directing and guiding him to do. Again, the pastor said it was not feasible; that this is not the way ministries were started or run. Gordon thanked him for his time and left.

Later, when we talked ,Gordon asked me what I thought. I told him that we felt God was calling us to start this ministry and I did not want to miss that calling. We prayed together and then Gordon announced, “God has called us; I believe that with my whole heart. We are going forward, no matter what man says.”

Thirty-four years later, AMH is still going forward, doing whatever God tells us to do.
